Obituary of Major D.A. "Tiny" Mills
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Douglas Albert “Tiny” Mills announces his passing on January 26, 2025 surrounded by his family at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital. Born in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, on July 22, 1936, he was a son of the late Frank and Marie (Chisholm) Mills.
He attended Royal Roads in Victoria, BC and graduated in 1959 from the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario following which he joined his beloved Black Watch Regiment as part of the Canadian Armed Forces. In that same year he married the love of his life, Shirley. Together they traveled the world while Tiny served postings in Germany, Halifax, Gagetown, Ghana, Calgary, attended Staff College in Toronto and served on a peace keeping mission in Cyprus. He retired from military service in 1992 while on his final posting in Gagetown and stayed in Oromocto.
Throughout his life Tiny was known by all for his kindness, gentle spirit and amazing sense of humor.
A beloved husband, father and grandfather, Tiny is survived by his wife, Shirley; sons, Darryl (Kathleen)Mills, Cochrane, AB, Paul (Jocelyne) Mills, Fredericton; grandchildren, Lauren, Josh, Kay, Owen and Hayden; brother, John “Selwyn” Mills, Riverview. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his sister, Vera Tong and his brothers, Clayton and Donald Mills.
The family would like to thank Dr. Bea Sainz for her kindness compassion and all the care that she provided. Many thanks also to the palliative care team at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital for the wonderful care they provided.
A visitation will be held at the Oromocto Funeral Home on Thursday, January 30, 2024, from 6:00 - 8:00 pm. A Funeral Service will be held at the Oromocto Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, January 31, 2024 at 2:00 pm, officiated by Reverend Stephen Harnish. A reception will follow in the Church Hall of St. John’s Anglican Church, Oromocto. For those who wish, donations in Tiny’s memory may be made to Dr Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital- Palliative Care Unit or a charity of the donor’s choice.
