Obituary of Janis Dewar Gibson

It is with sadness that the family of Janis Dewar Gibson announce her passing at the Dr Everett Chalmers Hospital, in Fredericton, New Brunswick on May 12th, 2025. Born on September 5th, 1959 in Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Alice (Way) Gibson.

Janis will be missed by her son, Easson Haskin; sister, Anne Cryderman; brother-in-law, Neil Cryderman; nieces, Alison Cryderman, Phillipa Cryderman, Emily Cryderman, and Natasha Gibson; grand-nieces, Emma Cryderman Del Ormo, Lucy Cryderman Del Ormo, Parker Cryderman Foote, Quinn Cryderman Foote & Maise Cryderman Foote; along with her loving neighbours; Roberta, Aret, Elisa, and Alexa Akcakiryan, and dear friend, Kathy Erin Smith. Although Janis did not have grandchildren, her son managed to keep her house full of four-legged love with Alice and Andi, her devoted dogs who never gave her any space on her bed. In addition to her parents, Janis was predeceased by her brother, Paul Gibson.

Janis was born in Kirkcaldy, Scotland, into a military family and spent time throughout the United Kingdom and Africa. When her father retired from the British Army, the family decided to settle in Sudbury, ON. The beautiful landscape of Northern Ontario is where the family still resides. Janis and Easson would travel home for Christmas chaos and enjoy every minute of it. Janis graduated from Lockerby Composite High School. She obtained two university degrees, one from Ryerson University and the second from the Royal Military College of Canada, via distance learning. Over the years, Janis worked for the City of Toronto, The New Brunswick Medical Society, and most recently for Service Canada, in the Foreign Workers Program.

When she was not at work, you could find Janis in the garden on sunny days with her dogs or watching and reading about military history. Her passion for learning never stopped. Her son would often find her watching another documentary series on World War Two and would let her know that the little guy with the funny moustache loses in the end. She would laugh and return to the program, as her joy for expanding her knowledge of the past never ceased. She was a loving mother and caring friend. She was not one to have a large circle of friends, but if you were lucky enough to be in her life, it meant you were held dear to her heart.

A celebration of Janis’ life will be held at the Oromocto Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 21st, 2025 from 3:00 to 6:00 pm. A family service of remembrance will be held in Sudbury, Ontario at a later date.

Donations in Janis’ name made to Anna’s Angels Dog Rescue would be appreciated by the family.
