Obituary of Doug Holder
The family is sad to announce the passing of Robert Douglas “Doug” Holder on June 2nd, 2025 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital (DECH), Fredericton, New Brunswick. Born on March 3rd, 1937 in Lower Cambridge, He was the son of the late Hazen and Myrtle (Lacey) Holder, and beloved husband to Lorraine (Butler) Holder.
In addition to his wife, Lorraine, Doug will be missed by his sons, Paul (Laurene), Stephen (June), and Jeffrey (Sherry); stepdaughters, Sheri Hersey (Rick) and Kellie Horncastle; grandchildren, Alex, Kyle, Kaleigh, Noah, and Sam; great grandchildren, Sophie, Grace, and Caleb; many cousins, especially Joan Rose of Essex, MA, as well as many nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Along with his parents, Doug was predeceased by his grandson, Jared Holder and his first wife, Elva (Mullin) Holder.
Doug worked at many things. He was an accountant for one year, but didn’t like it. Then he went into insurance working on claims. He had his own claim business in Newcastle until 1977, when he and his family moved to Fredericton to work with The Co-operators as an insurance claims adjuster, where he remained until his retirement in October 1999. He worked around his house in Harvey for 6 years, got tired, then went back to work merchandising for Leviton at Home Depot when it first opened in 2004, and retired from there in 2010. He also merchandised for Premium Retail Concepts, along with his wife, Lorraine.
Doug enjoyed fishing at the Forks, some hunting, and snowmobiling. He loved puttering around the house looking for things to do, even little things kept him busy. He belonged to the Newcastle Lions Club until he moved to Fredericton. His biggest enjoyment was going to the cottage in Queenstown every chance he got and then made the cottage his permanent residence. He also enjoyed his wintertime in Panama City Beach, FL. He couldn’t wait to get down there to enjoy the sun, and of course, a few of the hailstorms and some hurricanes.
On behalf of Doug, I would like to thank the DECH Geriatric Unit, Duffie Dementia Unit at OPH, ER and 3SW who took great care of Doug in his last days; Ambulance NB; as well as family and friends who helped along Doug’s journey. I would also like to thank the Lewy Body Dementia Group on Facebook (a private Group) who helped in my understanding of this terrible disease.
In accordance with Doug’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral. In lieu of flowers, donations made in Doug’s name to Fredericton Hospice House or to your local SPCA would be appreciated by the family.
