Obituary of Martin William Russell

It is with sadness that the family of Martin William “Bill” Russell announce his peaceful passing at Hospice House in Fredericton, New Brunswick, on November 13th, 2025 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on February 12th, 1942, in Sydney, Nova Scotia and was the son of the late William and Elizabeth (Chipman) Russell.

Bill will be missed by his “better half”, Joan Henderson; sons, Bob (Amanda), Billy (Sherry), Dion (Angela) and Devon (Kristal); daughters, Michelle (Scott) and Dana (Mike). He was the “Best Grampy EVER” to Trae, Justin, Xavier, Cody, Devon, Caleb, Sawyer, Emmett, Rachel, Aaliyah, Abby, Liam, and Piersyn; and great grandpa to Aubrey. He will also be missed by the mother of his children, Eileen; his brothers, Donald, Charlie (Brenda), and Art (Linda); sisters, Susan and Gladys (Stephen); his fur babies, Rocky and Molly, as well as countless nieces, nephews and friends.

In addition to his parents, Bill was predeceased by his grandson, Simon, and 9 brothers and sisters.

Bill enlisted in the military and spent a very fulfilling 26-year career.  He had several tours as a peace keeper, including Cyprus, Germany, as well as others.

Bill was known for being a jokester. His quick wit and sense of humour will be missed. He loved to go bowling, fishing and hunting, and volunteering. For many years, he was an avid supporter of the Salvation Army Church, through driving, pick ups, kettles, disaster relief, and band. He was a proud Christian and this showed throughout his life.

The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the Palliative Care Unit and the DECH, Extra Mural, and Hospice House for the kindness and care shown to Bill during this difficult time.

As per Bill’s wishes, a private family service will be held at a later date. For those who wish, donations to Hospice House or the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #93 in Bill’s name would be appreciated by the family
