Obituary of Vera Winnifred Winchester
“Are you having fun yet”?
Fitting last words for our beloved mom, grandmother and great-grandmother, who no matter what life threw at her, always kept her sense of humour and sharp wit. Vera Winnifred (Carr) Winchester, also affectionately known as Annie, took her last breath on February 5th, 2026, at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital, reuniting with her life partner and love, Bill (“Bubba”). Few people get to enjoy the enduring love they shared, starting with many ferry journeys across the Bay of Fundy in their early years between Digby and Saint John. Their love story would result in a life that spanned two continents, military service, two Oromocto businesses, and many new homes together. It led to the creation of a beautiful family; five children, Wendy, Ian, Wanda, Daryl and Baby Winchester; eight grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren. Their love, which endured for 72 years, truly was inspirational.
Vera was a legend in baking, hosting many pie- and punch-fueled family Christmas Eve parties over the years. She also loved to knit and quilt, leaving behind treasures such as her highly sought after thrum slippers, that will be held dear for years to come. She loved watching courtroom tv shows, cruising and travelling with Bill and her friends, stocking candy for her visitors, eating ice cream, reading a good book, and fighting off relentless attempts at getting hugs and her picture taken. Although she would never admit it, she also loved playing cards and was a ringer at 45’s. Although Oromocto became her forever home, Vera always considered herself a "West-sider".
She is survived and dearly missed by her four children, Wendy Greenwood (Jim), Ian Winchester (Kelly), Wanda LeBlanc (Jerry) and Daryl Winchester (Maxine). She is also survived and mourned by her eight grandchildren, Erin Beaudin (Tim), Jeff LeBlanc (Megan), Maggie Anderson (Jacob), Sara LeBlanc (Michael), Matthew Winchester (Shannon), Mark Winchester (Robyn), Allison White (Tyler) and Ian Winchester (Jeanelle). She also leaves behind a legacy of great-grandchildren, Mya Soderman, Helen Soderman, Nolan Beaudin, Nevin Beaudin, Laurel Beaudin, Isobel Soderman, Axel Soderman, Noah White, Arthur Winchester, Ace LeBlanc, Callum White, and Hugo Winchester.
In addition to her husband, Bill, Vera was predeceased by her father, John Carr; mother, Viola (Amero) Carr; brothers, Roy Carr (Fran) and Ronnie Carr (Lois); sisters, Muriel Carr and Edna Hosford, and Baby Winchester.
The family would like to thank the DECRH nursing staff at 4 West, including Emma, Madison and Anna, for their attention and support. A special thank you goes to Dr. Rideout for his compassion and great care.
A Celebration of Life will take place at the Oromocto Funeral Home on Saturday, February 14th, 2026, from 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm. For those who wish, memorial donations may be made to the Oromocto Food Bank, the IWK, the Canadian Cancer Society, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
