Obituary of Margaret Ruby Granter

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Margaret Ruby Granter announces her peaceful passing on Saturday, December 09, 2023. With great love and admiration, we remember her well-lived life. Born in Ludlow, NB, Margaret was the daughter of Fred McCarthy of Ludlow and Gladys McCarthy (Price) of Priceville, NB.

A community-oriented and dedicated volunteer, Margaret was well known in the Burton and Oromocto areas for her hard work in support of many community events – including, but by no means limited to, co-chairing Pioneer Days and coordinating and driving for Operation Red Nose in conjunction with the Burton Lions Club. She was always available to lend her support to any worthy cause.

Margaret also thoroughly enjoyed being a member of the Red Hat Society–sporting her red hat and purple regalia with pride and joining her fellow members living life to the fullest! Always up for a good time, she loved sharing stories about their many gatherings and bus trips.

She was recognized on countless occasions for her extensive community service—her many awards gave her much joy! Margaret was a life-time member of the Burton Lions Club and Ladies Auxiliary Legion Branch #93 – proudly serving in many officers’ positions. Margaret was an avid and talented cook and baker. She loved catering for crowds – from her family, birthday parties, and weddings to the community at large – the more the merrier! Many people had the pleasure of enjoying her delicious dinners featuring her mouthwatering homemade gravy and dressing, melt-in-your mouth roast beef, tasty baked beans, and a variety of desserts – which were all second to none.

Margaret enjoyed the pleasure of varied employment opportunities. A social butterfly with a love for owls, Margaret especially thrived working with former PC MLA Jody Carr. His biggest fan, she cherished her position as his administrative assistant as, together, they served the Oromocto-Gagetown community for several years.

Margaret is survived by daughter Kimberly Borthwick (Alex); sons Jim (Sally Shepard), Michael (Robert Doiron), and Tim (Penny); grandchildren Gregory Payne, Melissa Payne (Cody Koivunen), Tyler Granter (Julia), Courtney Granter (Mitchell Donohue); seven great grandchildren; sister-in-law Nancy McCarthy; brother-in-law Harvey Granter; and several nephews and nieces.

In addition to her parents, Margaret was predeceased by her loving husband Maxwell Scott Granter; brothers Earl “Duke” Price (sister-in-law Georgina) and Jim McCarthy; sisters Myrtle Palmer (Percy) and Mary Munn (Hedley); parents-in-law James and Caroline Granter; and a large circle of family members and friends.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Margaret’s doctors – Dr. Charlebois and Dr. Clarkson – and the DECH’s Emergency Room and Palliative Care Unit’s medical personnel for their excellent care; the loving staff at the Enhanced Living Gagetown Special Care Home; devoted sister-in-law Nancy McCarthy; and, special friends Jerry Hayward and Marion Dexter for their many visits and lunches. Thank you, also, to family and friends for the many kind expressions of support and sympathy – your comforting thoughtfulness is deeply appreciated.

Visitation will be held at Oromocto Funeral Home on Wednesday, December 13, from 4:00 - 7:00 pm. A memorial service will be held in the Oromocto Funeral Home Chapel on Thursday, December 14, 2023 at 11:00 am with Fr. Stephen Harnish officiating. Owing to allergies, the family, respectfully, requests no flowers. For those who wish, donations in Margaret’s memory may be made to the Burton Lions Club, Oromocto Legion Branch #93, or the charity of the donor’s choice.
