Obituary of Mary Donelda Daye
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mum, Mary Donelda (MacDonald) Daye, known to many as “Doddie”. Mary passed away at Pine Grove Nursing Home on February 24, 2024 at the age of 86.
Born on July 28, 1937 in Inverness, Cape Breton, NS, Mary was the fourth of twelve children of the late Dan J. and Mary E. (Chisholm) MacDonald of Plymouth, NS. Mary worked various jobs including “The Coffee Pot” in New Glasgow, NS, where she met the love of her life, George. On September 19, 1959 at the age of 22, Mary married George. Soon after they were posted to Ottawa, ON, where they had the first two of their three children. Later, they were posted back to NS, where Mary worked part-time, and where they had their third child. Finally, the family was posted to CFB Gagetown, Oromocto, NB where Mary decided to be a full-time mum. Mary loved devoting her time to her family, and was extremely proud of all of them. Mary later went back to work full-time at the D.E.C.H, for 15 years, before retiring due to a back injury. Mary loved their many poodles, travel, taking long walks, baking, bowling and ceramics. Much like George, Mary was very humble and loved the simpler things in life. Mary and George lived out their years together in Burton, NB. They always said “we’ll meet again at the pearly gates”, which is where we are sure Dad was waiting for her.
Mary will be deeply missed and forever remembered by her daughter, Donna Konkle (Barry), grandson, Tristan (Beatrice) and granddaughter, Jessica (Nick) of Burton, NB; son, Calvin (Jen) and granddaughters, Athena and Marina, of Orleans, ON; son, Geordie (Donna) and granddaughter Sarah of Fredericton, NB; sister, Delinah; brothers, Billy (Sheila), Larry (Lynn), Gerald (Brenda), Ronald and Danny (Dawn); sisters-in-law, Beverly MacDonald and Dora Day; brother-in-law, Merle (Marion) Day, as well as many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Mary was predeceased by her loving husband of 60 years, George, on July 4, 2019, at the age of 91; brothers, Jimmy and Malcolm; sisters, Florence Walker, Betty MacKay and Lauretta MacPherson, and daughter-in-law, Danette Pond.
Our family would like to thank all the staff at Pine Grove Nursing Home, for all the wonderful care they gave our mum over the last 10 months.
