Obituary of Gerald Vernon Gillies

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Gerald Vernon Gillies of Lower Lincoln, NB, husband of Josephine Lorraine (Barrett) Gillies, on March 13, 2019 at the Oromocto Special Care Home. Born on July 25, 1930 in Fredericton, NB, Gerald was the son of the late Clarence and Hilda Gillies of Lower Lincoln. In addition to his wife, Josephine, Gerald is survived by his three children, Roger Gillies (Dianna) of Lakeville Corner, Cynthia Naish (Jack) of Lincoln, Peter Gillies of Waasis; five grandchildren, Jeff Gillies (Gillian) of Oromocto, Curtis Gillies (Kelsey Merrett) of Victoria, BC, Sarah Carr (Ryan) of Geary, Ryan Naish (Caitlyn) of Oromocto, Fallon Gillies of Halifax; as well as eight great grandchildren. Gerald is also survived by his sister, Audrey Simpson of Thornhill, ON; sister-in-law, Cecelia Bowden of Grand Manan; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives. Gerald was predeceased by his parents and an infant son, Andrew Gillies; brothers, Eugene Gillies of Grand Manan and Rayworth Gillies (Ruth) of Fort Myers, Florida. Gerald was always busy doing something, whether it was raking or mowing a lawn or weeding and hoeing in the garden. He loved to work. He always fondly remembered and spoke often of going to his uncle's farm in the Belisle and helping with the haying and tending to the cows. His real passion was "the woodlot"!. He enjoyed nothing more than getting out there with his chainsaw! Gerald loved to dance and he and Jo would take every opportunity to show off their moves! He also looked forward to his annual hunting trips to The Dungarvon and Maple Grove. Gerald spent a wonderful long retirement after many years employed by NB Power at Mactaquac Dam. We would like to extend a huge thank you to the staff of Oromocto Special Care Home for the wonderful kindness and attention they gave to Gerald during his last few months and days. Not to forget the compassion shown from the Palliative Care nurses. We will never forget! In keeping with Gerald's wishes there will be no visitation or funeral. Interment will take place at a later date in the Lower Lincoln Cemetery. For those who may want to make a memorial contribution in Gerald's memory donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or Alzheimer Society would be appreciated by the family.
