Obituary of Gerald Ray Morrisey

The family of Gerald (Gerry) Ray Morrisey of Oromocto, New Brunswick, is sad to announce his passing on October 12th, 2019 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital in Fredericton, NB, just a couple months prior to his 89th birthday. Gerry was born on December 30th, 1930 at Brookfield, NS. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mida (nee Durette); children, Linda, Rick and Sharon (Jay); grandchildren, Jena (Todd), Samantha (Kodi) and Valerie; four great grandchildren; one of fifteen siblings, his sister, Elva Archibald; as well as multiple brother and sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces and nephews. Gerry was an avid sportsman and sports fan. In his early years he was a goaltender in hockey, but later in life turned his focus to enjoying the outdoors, especially chasing trout in a stream or walking through the woods hunting for wild game. He was a true Toronto Maple Leafs and Blue Jays fan. Gerry enjoyed the social atmosphere the Royal Canadian Legion provided, especially competing in billiards or card games such as cribbage and euchre. Gerry had a long and distinguished career with the Canadian Armed Forces. He was proud to be a soldier and was honoured to serve his country. In his 26 plus years of service his postings included Basic Training at Borden, ON, Kingston, ON, Soest, Germany, St. Johns, NFLD, Halifax, NS, Debert, NS and finally CFB Gagetown, in Oromocto, NB. Gerry also completed tours of duty in Injum River, Korea and Port Said, Egypt. He was decorated numerous times over his career having been awarded Korea Medal, United Nations Service Medal, United Nations Emergency Force Medal and Canadian Forces Decoration and Clasp. Gerry retired on May 17th, 1978. Subsequent to his retirement from the armed forces, Gerry worked as a school bus driver for seventeen years, providing safe transportation to the children of School District 17 in Oromocto, New Brunswick. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at both the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital and Saint John Regional Hospital for providing a professional level of care to Gerry while a patient at both facilities. At the family’s request there will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at the Oromocto Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday, October 16, 2019 at 1 pm. A tribute will be performed by members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 93, prior to the service, at 12:45 pm. The service will be followed by a reception at the Oromocto Royal Canadian Legion. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Alzheimer’s Society of New Brunswick.
