Girvan was a mentor and a gentleman. He just had a way about him that made learning from him easy. Our whole class looked up to him and enjoyed his personality and wit. Personally, as a high school drop out, he helped give me the confidence to make it through MFRS and go on to have a great career in forestry. I owe him a debt of gratitude. He was a great man and a heck of an instructor. Kevin Hudson (MFRS - Class of 1991)

So sorry to hear about the loss of Girvan. Girvan's work at the ranger school fostered a culture of integrity and romance among a generation of natural resources professionals. He had the rare ability to bring a technical discussion to life, so that while planning a silvicultural treatment one could smell the sawdust, hear the breeze flowing through the canopy, and imaging the possibilities of the next generation. What a guy.

One of the best instructors/people I ever met. Girv has a way like no other. I have an overwhelming sense of sadness to hear of his passing. I will never forget Girv and his kindness, his humour, and that little smirk he always had on his face. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. Take care Girv, you were the absolute best.

Girvan and my family may be distantly related, but we never had a chance to discover if this was true. As someone who worked in another wing at the Hugh John Flemming Forestry Complex, I was aware of his teaching excellence at the "Ranger School".

My condolences to Girvan's family. I was 18 years old and away from home for the first time when I had the good fortune of meeting him. His presence at MFRS was pivotal to my learning experience there. He tied everything together for us. His humor and the camaraderie he had with his students meant a lot to them and I will always remember him fondly.

So sorry to hear of Girvan%uFFFDs passing, he was one of the best when I attended Ranger School in 1988. Always enjoyed anytime I had a chance to talk with him after I graduated. Great Guy, So Sorry for Your Loss. Will reread his books, as I have them all and will think about him.

Girvan was a 'gentleman' from the first time we played together as children. Mary and Sam were good friends of my parents, Verda and Fred (Glencoe). By coincidence just last week I was 'home' and, as driving past Fox Brook Road, asked about Girvan, having lost track of him years ago. Although I was very saddened to see his obituary, so soon thereafter, it was apparent that his life was full of sharing his gentle manner, intellect, wit and decency; a life well-lived. My condolences, to Joan and his entire family. Nancy MacDonald (Glencoe and Guelph).
