Rest in peace, Mr. Nowlan. You never taught me formally, but you nonetheless instilled a love of the written word in me. you came to Hubbard as a bit of a celeb....with your very popular book Absolutely Absolom.....you let me sit on your lad and read from it. I remember you asking me if I could read, I'd been reading since I was 3. You were content to take the focus off yourself and let a kid read. I never forgot it, and I still have the autopgraphed copy of your boo GodSpeed sir, your family can be proud of the man and educator your were.

Dear Gertrude, Gregory, Mary, Theresa, James, Peter, grandchildren together with all family of Michael.. My and our profound love, sympathy and prayers to all of you on the return to God of dear Michael. I have very beautiful memories of dear Michael, Gertrude together of all of you at St. Vincent de Paul !! These beautiful memories remain in a special manner in my heart. Michael never Hid his many God -given Gifts under a bushel. He demonstrated such great humility and meekness . Yet, Michael always gave profoundly to others ...at Church ( Matthew was Blessed and often talks about Michael being his Catechism teacher for preparation for The Sacrament of Confirmation. Michael, without a doubt was a true teacher, respected by all, whether at the Church level or at the Public School level. Michael taught from the heart, addressing the needs of each and every student whom God placed before him...a very rare Gift! Dear Gertrude, you and Michael were certainly a great light for sooo many.... your love for each other flowing to your beautiful, special and fun family ....sooo many great memories that I have always treasured in my heart...even though we no longer live in Oromocto area...Oromocto and all from St. Vincent de Paul have never left my heart and prayers. Special prayers go out to all of you during this trying time. May you, dear Gertude together with all of you feel the Special Presence of Our Dear Lord, Our Dear Lady and Good St. Joseph today and always. Michael i am sure has "fought the good fight" ..May the soul of dear Michael receive his great reward. Again, with my and our profuse sympathy and our special prayers for all !! Love, sympathy and prayers... Diane Marie , Matthew and all Maillard Family

I never had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Nowlan, yet I felt I knew him for several reasons. Mary's stories about his poetry, his interest in the stamp world and his leadership at his school made me feel as if we were friends. On another note, every time I visited my eye doctor in Toronto, we talked all about Mr. Nowlan and his family because my doctor, Dr. Raisin, grew up in Oromocto! I always looked forward to hearing from him about what a wonderful teacher and administrator Mr. Nowlan was. This has been greatly reinforced as I read through the tributes to him on this website. May your lovely memories of him sustain you at this difficult time.

my deepest condolence's to Mr. Nowlans Family. when I read of his passing the tears flowed as I remembered the most influential teacher in my entire academic studies. Mr Nowlan was my grade 12 canadian literature teacher and although as a 16 year old kid in 1985 I had a love of the classics such as chaucer/milton and shakespeare, he literally opened my eyes then and forever to the greatness of canadiana like margaret lawrence. one special day i remember he had brought a tape recording in to play us an artist he was very fond of... it was suzanne by leonard cohen (my love of cohen and his vast discography began on that day in 1985 and continues still) as graduation neared he called me to his office as vice principal to give me something, it was signed copy of fred cogswell's light bird of life ( which i still have today). a couple of years ago (30 years since high school) i ran into Mr Nowlan at an event at the hazen center and knelt down beside his chair to thank him for being the biggest influence in my love of the written word and the greatest teacher i had through high school and university. his eyes lite up and smiled from ear to ear and i could tell he was full of pride with my praise of him. i was and am very proud to have had him in my life, and will never forget the gift and knowledge he gave me. Tony McLean posted a condolence
I first met "Mr. Nowlan" in my Grade 12 year at OHS, when we returned to Oromocto from a 3 year posting oversea's at CFB Lahr. I was a sports guy but "Mr. Nowlan" got me turned on to English 122 and as well, teaching! I'll never forget winning the Most Improved English student award at graduation! I went on to get an education degree and returned to OHS, where by this time "Mr. Nowlan" was now a Vice Principal. I remember as clear as day, the time within the first few weeks of my career, that I addressed him as "Mr. Nowlan" and he calmly and eloquently said to me, "Tony, it's Mike, we're colleagues now!" Blessed to have known him as a teacher, colleague and friend and as well, very appreciative of the friendship he shared with my parents, Jim and Rita McLean. My deepest condolences and hoping you all can find some comfort in the many wonderful stories that are being shared with you at this difficult time!

Dear Gertrude and family, Please accept my sincere condolences to you and family. I met Mike for the first time in 1959 or 1960 when I enrolled along with several others of our graduating class, which included his sister, Martina, at STU on the Mirimichi. I served as the manager of the STU varsity basket ball team which he coached and remember him working in the STU library. I also recall attending your wedding at St. Michael's. We both went into the teaching profession where he served in many capacities as the obituary indicates. The last time our paths crossed was again at STU around 2006 or 2007 when we were members of the Merton Book Club. STU was a big part of the Nowlan family as his brother Pat worked there for a number of years. Please extend my sympathy to Martina. With God's grace we may celebrate the 60th anniversary of our graduation from STU in a couple of years.

My deepest condolences on your father's passing. He was a favourite teacher of mine. I will never forget his incredible kindness. My first time flying, Mr. Nowlan was also on the flight. I was going to Winnipeg, he was going to Toronto. I was so nervous. After we were in the air, he saw that the seat next to me was unoccupied. He came back and sat with me, explaining when the wing flaps moved and what to expect on landing. When we arrived in Toronot, he helped me find out where my next gate was and walked me to it before leaving. All these things he didn't have to do but I am so glad he did. Such a gentleman. Much love and sympathy, Val.

Please accept my sincere condolences following the loss of a wonderful husband, father, educator, author, and friend to many. I was very lucky to have experienced his teachings as a teacher at Sunday School and a VP at OHS. I still remember when he pulled me out of class in Grade 10 to tell me he was going to be leaving OHS to go the the Department of Education. Who would have thought then that I would become a VP at OHS and work out of his same office 15 years later. I will have good memories from school, church and Gardiner Street and knowing the friendship held with my parents. He will be missed!

Dear Theresa and the Nowlan family: Please accept my deepest condolences on your loss. I met Michael during my years at the Gleaner, where I had the pleasure of editing his stamp column and other writings. I use the word "editing" in the loosest sense; if all copy arriving at my desk had been as clean, clear, and coherent as his, I would have been out of a job. Even more than Michael's writing, I will remember his kindness, his friendly smile, and his subtle humour. May his gentle soul rest in peace.
