Obituary of Dorothy Finnan

The family of Dorothy (Dot) Finnan (nee MacDonald) are saddened to announce her passing on June 9, 2021, at the Hospice House in Fredericton at the age of 91. Born in Chepstow, Prince Edward Island, in February 1930, she was the youngest daughter, and remaining survivor of the Aeneas and Catherine MacDonald farm family where she helped plant, pick and bag potatoes by hand, tend to chickens, milk cows, and learned to drive a tractor and automobile. Dot credited the Catholic Nuns in Souris, PE, for her distinct writing, math and reading skills, which she relied on working in the family business. Dot was most at ease with her sisters, especially with Mabel, on whom she relied for news and kinship until her passing two years ago. Besides her parents, Dot was predeceased by her husband Lawrence Joseph (Bud) Finnan, brothers Frank, Anselm, Joseph MacDonald, and sisters Mary Ellen Power, Rose Lane, Gertrude Carroll, and Mabel MacDonald. Dot is survived by her 8 children, Albert (Mary), Gerard, Claire Shepard (Roger), Andy (Carole), Ken (Lana Cassidy), Lillian King (Ron), Elizabeth, and Anne Chiasson (Pierre). She was especially loved as Nanny by Joshua Finnan, Katherine Finnan, Abram Finnan, Marian Finnan, Darrel Shepard, Mary Diduch, Kristal Milne, Lindsey Zook, Jake Finnan, Jason Finnan, Carl Finnan, Corey Finnan, Abbi Finnan, Greg King, Laura King, Adam King, Courtney McFarland, and Alex and Matthew Chiasson. Dot was blessed with 17 great grandchildren. Dorothy is survived by her brother-in-law Dickie Finnan and sister-in-law Theresa Perry. A devout Catholic Christian her entire life, a funeral Mass and Rite of Christian Burial will be held at St. Vincent de Paul Church at 11 am on Tuesday, June 15, 2021, with Father Charles Udeh as the celebrant. Due to social distancing restrictions attendance at the service will be by RSVP only. To reserve a seat please contact Oromocto Funeral Home at 357-5100. For those unable to attend, a recording of the service is available to view at the following link: https://vimeo.com/event/1067034/videos/561469903/.
