I was saddened to learn of the passing of the teacher I knew as Mrs. Canney. I moved to the Gagetown area in Grade 6 and was shy and feeling out of place. She made me feel welcome and comfortable in my new class and school. I am now a Grade 5 teacher and have fond memories of activities we did in her class. I remember International Day of the child and only eating brown rice for lunch because that is all many children in the world had to eat. Then later that day her allowing us to sample many foods from around the world, including octopus. I remember some songs that she taught us, that I still sing in my car to this day, "One Tin Soldier" and "59th Briddge Street Song". I remember her leting me walk to the store with her at lunch hour and her buying myself and a friend a snack and a half ice cream sandwich. I remember the camping trip she took us on and the fun we had for this year end trip. I ran into Nancy at Walmart a few years ago and told her I had become a teacher. She smiled and told me that it did not surprise her at all. This encouragement from a well-loved teacher meant the world to me. I can only hope that I leave my students with the self-esteem she inspired in me and as many happy memories. Please know she will always live on in my memories. My deepest condolences to all who love her dearly. Wendy (Nickerson) Peters
