Obituary of Maurice Melvin Ward
Maurice ‘Mo’ Melvin Ward, age 84, of Waasis, NB, passed away peacefully at Hospice Fredericton on December 14, 2021, with his loving wife, children and grandchildren by his side. Maurice was born May 31, 1937 and was the son of the late Ernest and Christina (Ward) Howland.
Maurice worked in the construction industry for most of his work life. He was a heavy equipment operator and worked for companies such as Diamond Construction where he helped build many of the roads in the province. He eventually went to work at NB Power and was there until his retirement in 1999. During his time there he did number of different jobs, but he most enjoyed his time operating the boom truck and helping the line crews. In retirement, Maurice continued to be active. He raised beef cattle, cut firewood, plowed snow, and gardened. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to others whether it be to clear their driveways in the wintertime or till their garden. Sadly, dementia ended those activities. However, Maurice continued to enjoy visits whether it be a chat over coffee (often with a special cousin, Phyllis, and her daughters) or just a quick hello. This past summer had also included a special visit with his great grandchildren.
Maurice is survived by his loving wife of 59 years Melodia (Breau); his children, Jackie (Dr. Rev. Byron Hand) of Lucan, ON, Paul (Anna) of Douglas, NB, Sandra (Peter Whitters) of Rusagonis, NB, Jeannette (Brent Rees) of Lincoln, NB, and Roger (Julia) of Waasis, NB; grandchildren, Christina, Brandon, Katie, Caroline, Jordyn, Alexandra; great grandchildren, Elliana, Adelyn and Luther.
The help of many allowed Maurice to be at home for as long as possible. However, special thanks go to Julia (his daughter-in-law), who was there even in those times when Maurice wasn’t feeling too kindly. Thanks also go out to Extra Mural, his caregivers (Susan and Amanda). We are also grateful to the Palliative Care (Dr. McDonald) and the nursing staff at Hospice Fredericton for their compassionate care of Maurice (and the family).
A visitation will be held at Oromocto Funeral Home on Saturday, December 18, 2021 from 10 am - 12:00 pm. A memorial mass will be celebrated from St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church on Saturday, December 18, beginning at 2:00 pm. Due to current provincial regulations, proof of vaccination and government issued identification will be required for entry to both the visitation and service. For those unable to attend in person a live stream will be available at the following link: https://vimeo.com/657448746. For those who wish, donations in Maurice's memory can be made to Hospice Fredericton or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
